With the naked eye, on the southside of the constellation of Cassiopeia, you will see a faint point of light, through an amateur telescope it will look like a oval smudge of light, this is Andromeda, (or messier 31), our nearest galaxy, with messier33 or Triangulum galaxy (in distance terms) being not far behind, a WHOLE galaxy visible to us.

Betelgeuce is about 640 light-years away in the constellation of Orion, but is soo big (20 solar masses) we can detect surface detail!!!
